Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
(pages 92-125)
Do the characters seem real and believable?
The main character Melinda does seem real and believable
just because of the situation
Anderson puts her through in the story. She reacts the way any
other rape victim would ashamed, embarrassed, quiet and afraid.
Ashamed because shes feels like it was all her fault it happened.
Embarrassed because she thinks people would judge
her if she said anything. Quiet because she thinks no matter
who she told they wouldn't believe her. And afraid because
if she told the wrong person it might
get back to him and he might come after her
again.Another way she seems believable is because the
book is set mostly in her first year of high school and is going through
the typical freshman "vibe",which is trying to make/find friends , finding a seat at lunch and talking about what happened
over the summer which in her case she doesn't want to relive.
What would your reaction be if you were
Rachel (Melinda's ex- best friend) and she told you that
the boy you are dating was the one who raped her?

i think if i was rachel and melinda told me that the boy i was dating raped heri dont think i would believe her as much as that seems bad its because they are nolonger friends and depending on why they aren't friends anymore i would feel that shes just trying to ruin my realtionship because she's unhappy so she wants me to feel the same way!
If i was rachel and my ex best friend told me that my current boyfriend raped her i dont think i would believe her i would have alot of mixed emotions. I would feel like shes trying to get back at me for us not being friends.
