Yes the characters react the same way in the book that they would as if it were real when susie gets raped her mother is automatically worred about her and her well being because she couldnt find her daughter and of course like all fathers her father is also concerned but is mot trying to show it because he is a man and he is supposed to be strong not only for himself but also for his family.
Has there ever been a tme where you felt you needed to be strong for someone else besides yourself but you just knew that eventually you would crack??

To answer your question yes.The seems like it has alot of conflict in it.
Yes, there have been time when I had to be strong to help a friend to stay strong, even tho I know I would eventually crack.
